Ash Class’ Act of Remembrance by George Webster

On the 10th November, a third of Ash Class walked down to the Coombe Bissett War memorial to do the Act of Remembrance. The men who were in the Armed Forces during the mid-20th century [Mr Rushforth, Mr Van Der Horst, etc.] came to guide us through.   Mr Van Der Horst said some prayers and then we recited our poem, ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae. It goes like this,   ‘In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.’   ‘We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived. Felt dawn. Saw sunset glow. Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders Fields.’   ‘Take up our quarrel with the foe To you with failing hands we throw The torch. Be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders Fields.’   A friend of Mr Van Der Horst read out the Roll of Honour [A scroll which men who died in the Wars’ names are written upon] before doing the 2-minute silence. When we had observed the silence, Rev. Jenny read out a prayer while Riley laid the wreath of poppies on the foot of the War memorial. Afterwards we all went inside for refreshments.
