Arts Week 2014

Arts Week this year followed the theme of our topic: On Our Doorstep. Through dance, drama, music, creative writing, art and sculpture the children explored and developed their knowledge, understanding and appreciation of our local area.

To launch the week all the children were invited to bring in a photo of themselves outside their own front door. These were then used as part of the decoration of a Class Front Door.

Our youngest children in Oak Class focussed on the plants and wildlife in our school grounds. The children combined dance and drama to create a performance – planting a seed. They also went on mini-beast hunts around the school for inspiration for junk-models and clay models of mini-beast and bugs. The children of Elm Class took Coombe Bissett Village Shop as their inspiration. They visited the shop to make sketches and take photographs which they used later in their learning: creating models of different features with clay and also using dance and drama to create their own village shop story. Fir Class took the Coombe Bissett Nature Reserve as their inspiration. On their visit to the nature reserve they were thrilled to see red kites, orchids and blue butterflies as well as the more common mini-beasts and plants. The children went on to use origami to recreate butterflies as well as using their finds to decorate Fir Class’ Front Door’. For our oldest children in Ash Class the focus was St Michael and All Angels Church. The children made sketches and took photographs to refer to in class, making clay models and developing their painting and drawing skills. Throughout the week there were opportunities for all the children to use their art, sculpture, weaving, poetry, music, dance and drama skills; all the children were involved in creating sheep models using plastic milk bottles and plastic bags which are now sited in our school grounds with willow eagles and peacocks woven by our older children in Ash Class.

All the children also had the opportunity to create a giant weaving on our Giant Outdoor Loom built especially for us. The older children also had opportunities to learn from two of our parents: Mrs McGuire an oil painter and Mr Spencer a break-dancer! The whole week was a huge success with the whole school community coming together to celebrate with our Arts Week Spectacular – afternoon tea to accompany performances incorporating dance, music, drama and poetry in as well as exhibition tours.
